Long Island Rail Road service is temporarily suspended in both directions between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma after an eastbound train hit a car that was on the tracks Saturday night, officials said.
A Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman said the car stopped on the tracks on Little East Neck Road in Wyandanch, just east of the Pinelawn station, for an unknown reason.
The driver was able to get out before the 5:12 p.m. train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma struck the car at about 6:30 p.m., the spokeswoman said.
The driver was not injured but was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with anxiety, the spokeswoman said. There were about 600 people on the train at the time, and no one was hurt.
One eastbound and one westbound Ronkonkoma line train was canceled after the collision.
A tweet from LIRR at about 8:20 p.m. indicated the train was still stuck at the site of the crash and that a rescue engine was en route. The Little East Neck Road crossing is on a single-track part of the railroad.
