LIRR: Service restored on Ronkonkoma line

An unlicensed woman driving a minivan lost control of the vehicle and crashed onto the Long Island Rail Road tracks in Wyandanch Tuesday, damaging the electrified third rail and stalling morning rush-hour commuter trains.
Service on the LIRR's Ronkonkoma Branch was restored about 9:15 a.m. after almost three hours of delays, officials said.
The crash occurred about 6:30 a.m. east of the Wyandanch station, at West 23rd Street and Long Island Avenue.
The driver was treated and released from a hospital, a railroad spokesman said. She was issued a traffic summons by MTA police for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. No trains were involved in the crash.
The service suspension initially affected all service between Ronkonkoma and Farmingdale. The railroad later suspended service between Ronkonkoma and Hicksville -- though it added extra westbound trains departing from Farmingdale.
Railroad spokesman Sam Zambuto said trains west of Hicksville also made additional stops Tuesday morning to accommodate riders who usually take Ronkonkoma line trains.
