LIRR train hits unoccupied car in Bay Shore; driver charged with DWI

An intoxicated man abandoned his vehicle near the Long Island Rail Road train tracks in Bay Shore, where it was struck by a train early Sunday, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

No one was injured in the incident, said MTA spokeswoman Meredith Daniels. The man, who was not identified, abandoned his vehicle in the right of way east of the Bay Shore station between Second and Third avenues, then ran away, Daniels said.

A Jamaica-bound train out of Speonk struck the unoccupied vehicle at 12:49 a.m., Daniels said.

There were about 20 passengers aboard the train; none were uninjured, Daniels said.

MTA police found the driver of the vehicle running near Sunrise Highway, where he was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

The affected train was taken out of service at Babylon, and customers were taken to Jamaica on another train, she said.
