LIRR trains changed, canceled
New schedules on the Long Island Rail Road take effect Monday and include major changes to some trains, as well as a few cancellations.
The LIRR's Main Line, Long Beach, West Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Montauk and Far Rockaway branches are all affected by the changes, which are necessary to accommodate track work and improve service, officials said. The new timetables last through Nov. 6.
Track projects include cleaning the Main Line right of way, installing new rail ties between Babylon and Sayville on the Montauk branch, and improving grade crossings on the Main Line and Long Beach branches.
In some cases, the work requires taking one track out of service and adds extra time to some trips.
Ongoing projects, such as the East Side Access plan to link the LIRR to Grand Central Terminal and upgrade of track infrastructure along Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, also continue to affect schedules.
The changes include canceling some weekday, midday trains on the Port Jefferson and Montauk lines. Other trains are being adjusted by as much as 30 minutes.
In addition to those schedule changes, rail inspections on Sept. 14 and 15 will result in buses replacing trains on four midday trains between Patchogue and Montauk.
For detailed information on all the schedule changes, customers can pick up a copy of the new Sept. 12 to Nov. 6 timetables, or go to mta.info/lirr.
