A train hit and killed a woman on the Long Island Rail Road tracks west of Northport Wednesday morning, the LIRR said.

An LIRR spokeswoman said an unauthorized person was on the tracks near the Elwood Road crossing at about 5:05 a.m. The woman was 20 years old, she said, but she did not have any other details.

Suffolk County police also were at the scene, a police spokeswoman said.

Service was halted about two hours. It resumed with the running of the 6:45 a.m. Port Jefferson train due at Hunterspoint Avenue at 8:30 a.m.

Three early trains from Port Jefferson also were delayed - the 5:44 a.m., the 4:18 a.m. (due in Huntington at 5:02 a.m.) and the 4:55 a.m. train (due at Hunterspoint Avenue at 6:37 a.m.).

Buses were used to transport customers to other stations, the spokeswoman said.
