Longwood school district alerts parents about suspicious car

Parents in the Longwood school district are being warned about a suspicious car that pulled over at a bus stop in Middle Island, school officials said Wednesday.

The school district issued a news release saying it is alerting parents about an incident on Tuesday, in which the driver of a green four-door Buick pulled over about 8:30 a.m. at a school bus stop on Westfield Road.

Superintendent Michael Lonergan said the district received a report that a man was driving the "suspicious" car.

Suffolk County police acknowledged they have been notified of the incident, and school officials have asked bus drivers and school staff to be especially vigilant.

"Whenever possible, children should team up with a buddy or be met at their bus stop by an adult or older sibling," Lonergan said in the release.

He also said parents should call their children's school and police to report anything suspicious.

The district also contacted families via a telephone messaging system, with middle school principal Lisa Mato reminding parents that their children "need to be alert, aware of their surroundings and careful."
