A Longwood school district security guard was killed Saturday night after his car crashed into a utility pole in Yaphank, Suffolk County police said.

Daniel Methven, 39, of Bohemia, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Impala north on Yaphank-Middle Island Road at 8:50 p.m. when his car hit the pole and ended up in a wooded area, police said.

Methven, who was working security for the Longwood school district in Middle Island at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Longwood school district spokeswoman Myra Vaughn said Methven was conducting building inspections and driving between schools at the time of the accident.

"Our hearts go out to his family," Vaughn said. "Longwood will do what we can to assist them during this difficult time."

Police are continuing the investigation, and are asking for any witnesses to the crash to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
