Police: Cyclist hit, killed after swerving into oncoming traffic in Lake Ronkonkoma

A Bohemia man was killed Tuesday when the bicycle he was riding swerved into oncoming traffic and was hit by a car, Suffolk County police said.
Luis Benitez, 51, of Bohemia, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck on Portion Road in Lake Ronkonkoma at about 8:11 p.m., police said.
Benitez was riding west on the roadway when his bicycle swerved and was hit by a 2014 Nissan, driven by Laura Heerbrandt, 23, of Ronkonkoma, and traveling east, according to a news release.
Heerbrandt was not injured; her vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
