MacKay: No decision on highway endorsement

State and Suffolk Independence Party chairman Frank MacKay said he hasn't decided whom to support in the special election for Brookhaven highway superintendent, although one candidate, Republican town board member Kathleen Walsh, last week switched her enrollment to his minor party.

"By no means has a decision been made," said Mac-Kay, who said Walsh's party switch won't affect his decision, which must be postmarked no later than Monday. Walsh faces Assemb. Dan Losquadro (R-Shoreham) in the March 5 election.

While Walsh signed enrollment forms, MacKay noted that under state law "Kathy is still officially a Republican until after the election" in November. That means she could still run in a GOP town board primary in September if she does not win the highway job. -- Rick Brand
