Woman charged with animal cruelty after starving pit bull dies, SPCA says
A 22-year-old East Patchogue woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after a pit bull, who authorities said she had mistreated, needed to be euthanized.
Madison Cammarata, of 184 Patchogue Ave., was charged Sunday with the misdemeanor for the May incident and will be arraigned Sept. 17 in First District Court in Central Islip, the Suffolk County SPCA said.
The SPCA said it launched an investigation after being notified in May by the Guardians of Rescue that a 7-year-old pit bull named Duncan had been surrendered to them -- and that the dog appeared to be starving.
Because of poor health and a poor prognosis, the SPCA said, the dog had to be euthanized. An investigation found the dog had "foreign objects" in its stomach, the SPCA said.
Additional details were not immediately available.
The SPCA said Cammarata was charged "for allegedly not caring for her dog properly, resulting in its death."
