Main Road/Route 25 between Peconic and Cutchogue remained closed in both directions Tuesday afternoon after a car knocked down a utility pole, officials said.

The female driver, who was alone in the car, was injured and was taken for treatment to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, according to Southold Fire Department 2nd Assistant Chief Peggy Killian.

Police said the accident happened at 9:18 a.m. but that no additional details were immediately available. The road was closed from Skunk Lane to Indian Neck Lane.

Killian said the driver said the car went out of control and “slid off the road.” The air bags deployed, but the driver is not believed to have life-threatening injuries, Killian added.

A major problem, Killian said, is that the road will have to be closed “for quite sometime” to remove the pole, which fell into the middle of the road. She described it as a “main pole” with a variety of types of wires.

“There are telephone wires, high-tension wires ... some of everything,” Killian said. “All the wires are dangling and at least have to be suspended [in the air]. The road is going to be closed for quite some time.”
