A 20-year-old man standing in front of his Amityville house was shot once in the back late Monday by an assailant who then ran away, Suffolk police said.

The victim was smoking a cigar on Maple Avenue when the shooter walked up the driveway and fired before running off, detectives said.

The victim "turned around to go in and got shot," said First Precinct Det. Sgt. James Murphy.

Ka'Ron Stephens was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he remained Tuesday afternoon in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim told police that he has no idea who wanted to harm him and that "he has no enemies," Murphy said.

Police said Stephens was "very cooperative" in giving a detailed description of the suspect, and investigators believe he was targeted.

"We don't think it was random," Murphy said.

Police are searching for a gunman who wore a gray hoodie with an orange and yellow logo on the front. He appears to be in his late 20s and about 5-foot-11 with a medium build, police said.

Detectives have been interviewing neighbors to find witnesses and going through crime records for possible suspects, Murphy said.

Police ask anyone with information to call the First Precinct detectives at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
