Strange noises coming from an unoccupied house led to the arrest of a man attempting to steal copper pipe in Wyandanch Tuesday night, Suffolk County police said.

Following a 911 call from a neighbor, Terry Coleman, 36, of 150 N. 22nd St., Wyandanch, was arrested by police as he hid in a nearby sump.

The incident at a house on Main Avenue was reported at 8:27 p.m.

Police said a neighbor "heard noises" coming from the unoccupied house and called 911.

But officers arrived to find Coleman had left the house, police said. Police said that with the assistance of the neighbor and a specially equipped Suffolk County Police Aviation unit helicopter, officers soon located Coleman in the sump.

Police charged Coleman with third-degree burglary.

He was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
