A Brooklyn man and one of his dogs were rescued from a pond in Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown Saturday afternoon after the man fell through thin ice, Suffolk County police said.

The man, who was not identified, was walking his two dogs in the park off Veterans Memorial Highway when one of them, Dena, got loose and ran onto a semifrozen New Mill Pond near a boat dock at the canoe and kayak launch about 11:50 a.m., police said.

The man, 56, ran after his dog and fell in, police said.

Several units responded to the scene, including officers from Suffolk County’s Fourth Precinct; emergency services, aviation and marine units, as well as park rangers.

Michael Coscia, an emergency service section officer, donned a water rescue suit and crawled out on the ice while tethered to a rope held by fellow officers Michael Simpson and Robert Stahl. Sgt. Michael Homan helped the officers pull the man from the water and the officer off the ice.

Dena then walked off the ice back to shore, police said.

The victim — who was chest-high in icy water — was out of the pond by 12:18 p.m., police said.

He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital by the Smithtown Fire Department for treatment of hypothermia after spending about 25 minutes in the water, police said.

The man’s two dogs were warming up inside a police vehicle near the pond after the rescue when the victim’s brother, a former chief of the Commack Fire Department, went to the scene about 1:45 p.m. to pick them up. He said he was not there when the accident occurred, but said his brother often goes to the scenic park to walk his dogs. Police said they did not know the name of the other dog.
