A Bohemia man was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon after police said he threw a bottle full of flammable liquid out of a car window, starting a fire on a local street Sunday in Lake Grove.
The incident occurred at about 7:50 p.m., Suffolk County police said. Police did not identify the street where the incident occurred due to what they called "investigative reasons."
Police said that a local resident told responding Fourth Precinct officers that a man threw the bottle from a car window, then fled. The resident said that when the bottle landed in the street it caught fire -- and that he put out the flames with a hose.
The witness provided officers with a vehicle description.
Police said the car was located about 40 minutes later at a Gulf gas station on Expressway Drive South in Holbrook.
The driver, Anthony Persico, 25, of Bohemia, was then identified as the man who threw the incendiary device, police said.
Arson Squad detectives then arrested Persico and charged him with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
He is scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Central Islip.
