Man arrested in hit-and-run crash in Shirley that left woman injured

A Baiting Hollow man was arrested Saturday night in connection with a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a female pedestrian Thursday evening, Suffolk police said.
Police said John Almeida, 23, fled after striking Marie Braccia, 54, with his 2002 Nissan Maxima. Braccia was crossing Grand Avenue in Shirley around 8 p.m. Thursday when she was struck. She was rushed to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue.
Braccia was transferred from Brookhaven on Friday and is now a patient at Stony Brook University Hospital, according to officials at each hospital.
Suffolk police arrested Almeida around 9 p.m. Saturday. He was charged with leaving the scene of an incident involving a serious physical injury and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Police said they were holding Almeida overnight at the 7th Precinct headquarters. He was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
