A Greenport man was arrested on Saturday and charged with unlawfully dealing with a child after he was seen procuring alcohol for a teenager, Southold Town police said.

Police said they saw Howard K. Brooks, 47, put a bag on the sidewalk outside Mr. Roberts, a convenience store on Front Street in Greenport, at 9:50 p.m. A 15-year-old boy then grabbed the bag, tucked it under his jacket, and started walking north on Third Street, police said.

Police stopped the teen and found a 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor in the bag.

Brooks admitted that he took money from the teen to buy the alcohol for him, then left it for the teen to pick up, police said.

Brooks was arrested and charged with unlawfully dealing with a child, a misdemeanor. He was placed into custody to await arraignment. There is no information on whether the teen will face charges, police said.
