A Flanders man was arrested on weapons and endangerment charges after police said he fired a handgun at another man during an argument Wednesday afternoon in Riverhead.

Joseph M. Smith, 50, of 510 Oak Ave., Flanders, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree menacing, Riverhead Town police said. He was arraigned Thursday in Riverhead Town Justice Court and remanded to the Suffolk jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Police said the incident occurred at a home on Lincoln Street just after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The victim, William Kowalski, 27, of Riverhead, told police he had been involved in "a physical altercation" with Smith and that Smith had shot at him with a .32-caliber handgun. Kowalski was not struck.

Police said Smith was later arrested at his home in Flanders.
