Man charged with rape of Kings Park jogger

A man who raped a woman out for an early morning jog in Kings Park on Tuesday was arrested about 10 hours after the assault, police said Thursday.

Suffolk County police said the man forced the woman into a wooded area near Marvin Drive at about 6 a.m. and sexually assaulted her there.

"She gets taken into the woods by this subject, where he repeatedly rapes her," said Det. Sgt. Edward Compagnone, a supervisor at the Smithtown-based Fourth Squad who's on the case.

The suspect, Luis Sanchez, 23, of Kings Park, was arrested later that day and charged with first-degree rape and two counts of first-degree criminal sexual act, police said. He was arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip and is jailed at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility on $1,000,025 bond or $500,025 cash, according to court records.

Compagnone said the suspect lives about a quarter-mile from the crime scene and found him based on witness descriptions. Compagnone wouldn't say what physical evidence, if any, connected Sanchez to the crime. Police said the victim did not know him.

Police said the identity of the woman has not been released because she is the victim of a sexual assault. Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
