Man cut from car after Northern State crash

Rescue personnel from the Dix Hills Fire Department used hydraulic cutters to free a man from his car Wednesday after it crashed into trees on the Northern State Parkway, a department official said.

The driver had head trauma and other injuries and was taken by helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center, said Tom Magno, an assistant fire chief with the department.

The man was driving a Volkswagen sedan east on the parkway shortly before 6 p.m. when the car hit a light pole and lodged between two trees, Magno said.

Rescue workers needed about 10 minutes to free the driver, he said.

Magno said he had no further information on the driver's injuries.

The accident closed eastbound traffic on the parkway to Wolf Hill Road for a short time.
