Suffolk police responding to a call in an industrial area of Bay Shore Monday found a man who had killed himself after critically injuring his girlfriend, authorities said.
The man, identified as Edvin Sorto Gomez, 48, injured his 57-year-old girlfriend and then hanged himself, homicide detectives said. Police did not say how she was injured.
Police said officers had responded to a call at about 11:30 a.m. to check on the welfare of residents at the home. Gomez was pronounced dead by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office.
Homicide detectives remained at the scene early Monday night to investigate.
Detectives went in and out of a gated lot that neighbors believe to be a truck-storage yard, where a street sweeper and a fuel oil truck were among the vehicles Monday.
Investigators could be seen at the doorway of a mobile trailer-type structure that had tarp covering the top and was next to a construction trailer.
One nearby business owner said a man lived there with his two dogs, but no one working nearby appeared to have heard any disturbance.
The area is home to several construction companies, vehicle repair and maintenance shops and other industrial businesses.
The crime scene was across from the Heartland Golf Park and not far from the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park.
