A Sagaponack man and his dog died Saturday in an early morning blaze that took four fire departments to put out, Southampton Town police said.

James Beres, 71, was unable to escape the flames that had engulfed his house at 198 Narrow Lane by the time authorities arrived, police said.

One occupant escaped with minor injuries, police said.

The blaze was reported to 911 shortly before 6 a.m., police said, and fire volunteers responded from the Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton and East Hampton fire departments, along with emergency medical services responders from Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor, police said.

The fire is being investigated by Southampton Town fire marshals and police, Suffolk County police arson detectives and the county medical examiner.

No other details were released.
