A house party guest in Medford died Saturday after the homeowner pulled him unresponsive from a backyard swimming pool and tried to save him with CPR, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

A department news release named the guest as 25-year-old Sleigan Laroc, of Queens Village. His death is being investigated by the homicide squad, although no criminality is suspected, the police press office wrote in an email.

The incident happened around 9:35 p.m. during a small gathering at a house on Bloomington Street, a cul-de-sac just north of the Long Island Expressway.

After pulling Laroc from the water, the homeowner performed CPR before police officers arrived and took over, the release said. Laroc was pronounced dead at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk in Patchogue, according to police.

The pool is 10 feet at the deep end, the email said.

Each year in the United States, about 4,000 people unintentionally drown, according to the American Red Cross. After decades of decline, drowning deaths are on the rise, according to a study released last year published in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vital Signs report.
