A man who crashed his car in West Islip was charged under Leandra's Law after he was found to be driving while impaired by drugs with his 1-year-old boy in the car, police said Thursday.

State Police said John P. Hauser's son was in his car when he crashed his 2008 Nissan Sentra on the Robert Moses Causeway Tuesday morning.

No one was injured, though the child was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center as a precaution, police said.

Hauser, 41, of Oakdale, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated driving while ability impaired by drugs after police conducted tests, police said. Hauser also had a small quantity of marijuana, police said.

Hauser was charged under Leandra's Law, which makes it a felony to drive while impaired in New York with a child under age 15 in the car.

He also was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, second-degree criminal personation and traffic offenses, police said.

Police said the crash occurred at 9:30 a.m. on the southbound causeway south of Sunrise Highway. Police said Hauser lost control of the car, left the road and struck several trees.

Hauser initially gave police the name of an acquaintance because he was attempting to evade prosecution for a suspended license, police said.

The boy was placed in the care of a relative, police said. Arraignment details for Hauser were not immediately available Thursday.
