An unidentified man found dead on a Brentwood street early Thursday appears to have been hit in the head, Suffolk County police said.

"We believe it was intentional. We don't believe it was a fall," Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky, commander of the Homicide Squad, said of the injury.

A passing motorist called police after seeing the body lying against the curb on Nimitz Avenue between Bradley and Merrill streets at 6:12 a.m., he said.

The area is mostly residential, and there are several churches nearby, Pelkofsky said. He said police believed the man had been walking in the area, but did not know where he was going or where he was coming from.

The lieutenant said the man had not yet been identified.
