Suffolk County Police responded to a possible attempted suicide Tuesday morning after they received a call reporting a gas leak in a parking lot in downtown Huntington, authorities said.

Second Precinct Officers found an adult male inside a white van and took him for evaluation to Huntington Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

"When we got there, he was unconscious," said Andrea Golinsky, a spokeswoman for Huntington Community First Aid Squad, one of the first responders on the scene. "They worked on him, and they transported him to Huntington Hospital. I believe he was in critical condition at that point."

Golinsky confirmed the van's interior appeared to have been doused with gasoline.

Police officers arrived at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at 269 New York Ave., outside a restaurant. At least two fire trucks and six other emergency vehicles were at the scene, where officers roped off the parking lot, preventing a small crowd from reaching their cars.

Police declined to identify the man or provide additional details. Two hours after police arrived, the parking lot smelled strongly of fuel, and officers were seen removing containers from the van, which had its rear windows broken. Small gasoline containers sat to the side of the vehicle.

The lot is the same location where a burning body was found in April.
