Man gunned down outside West Babylon home
Homicide detectives investigating the shooting death of a Deer Park man outside a West Babylon home had no suspects Wednesday and were looking for clues in the 23-year-old man's death.
Te-shon Garrett was gunned down Tuesday night as he sat on a wooden staircase chatting with friends, Suffolk County police said Wednesday.
The shooter approached on foot and fired into Garrett's torso from about 30 feet away, said Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman, a homicide squad supervisor.
Garrett had been hanging out with at least two other men on the staircase at a home on Fulton Street when he was struck about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. He died soon after.
"They were just sitting on the stairs, just talking," Groneman said.
Witnesses described the suspect as male, about 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8, who was wearing blue jeans and a light-colored hooded sweatshirt. He fled on foot eastbound on Fulton toward Westchester Avenue.
Detectives said anyone with information about the case could call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
Garrett lived with his great-grandmother, Thelma Martin, in Deer Park. Wednesday afternoon, she sat on her living room couch and sobbed into her hands.
Garrett's girlfriend of eight years, Bianca Thompson of Amityville, 23, draped her arm over the 86-year-old woman's shoulder as she wept.
The family had just celebrated July Fourth with Garrett at a cousin's home in Bay Shore, where they enjoyed drinks and a barbecue with burgers, steaks and potato salad, relatives said.
But they spent Wednesday making funeral plans, which were incomplete.
They remembered Garrett as a loyal friend who was trying to make it as a rap artist inspired by the likes of Waka Flocka Flame and other successes.
"He was a young man trying to make it in this world," said his great uncle, Andrew Martin, 48, of Deer Park. "He'd always say, 'I'm going to make it in this world.' "
