An ambulance and sheriff's deputies rushed to a Long Island Expressway overpass early Friday afternoon for a report of a person jumping onto the highway, officials said.

Chief Michael Sharkey of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office said an adult male jumped into the westbound lanes at Exit 53 from the Sagtikos Parkway overpass.

"He was not struck by cars. He was conscious, but he is injured," Sharkey said.

The westbound lanes were partially closed, and an ambulance was on scene, he said. A rescue helicopter was en route to take the man to a hospital.

Officials did not identify the man, who they believe intentionally jumped from the overpass.

Suffolk police said a call about a person jumping from the parkway in Hauppauge came in at 1:47 p.m.

No further details were immediately available.
