Investigators probe a crash on Montauk Highway in front of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center Wednesday morning. (Oct. 20, 2010) Credit: James Carbone

A man in a motorized wheelchair was hit by a car and killed as he crossed Montauk Highway in West Islip Wednesday morning, Suffolk County police said.

Gary Johnson, 55, of Dix Hills, was crossing the street near Milligan Lane at 6:31 a.m. when he was hit by a Ford Mustang driven by Nancy T. Mecca of West Islip.

Johnson was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center at 8:06 a.m., police said. The accident was in front of the hospital.

Mecca, 39, was treated at Good Samaritan for minor injuries.

The vehicle has been impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing, police said.

The accident closed the road in both directions between Keith Lane and Beach Drive for at least 3 1/2 hours, police said.
