A man suffered a severe hand injury in an explosion at his home in Huntington Saturday, officials said.

William Wemyss, 21, was in surgery Saturday night at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Greenlawn Fire Chief Scott Dalrymple said that firefighters received a 911 call about 2:15 p.m. and went to a house on Oldfield Road, near the intersection with Tilden Lane.

"It was some type of explosion," Dalrymple said.

Suffolk County police officers had already bandaged Wemyss' hand by the time firefighters arrived. Police said Wemyss lives in the home.

The Suffolk County Police Aviation Unit flew Wemyss to the hospital, Dalrymple said. There were no other injuries.

Suffolk County police's arson unit was still investigating the incident last night, police said.

The phone at Wemyss' house was busy Saturday night.
