An eastbound LIRR train struck and killed a man who officials said was trespassing on the tracks near the Brentwood station Wednesday night.

The man was not identified, but a Long Island Rail Road spokesman said that he was struck at a railroad crossing by the 6:21 p.m. train from Penn Station at about 7:20 p.m.

Sal Arena, the LIRR spokesman, said the crash caused considerable delays and affected train service in both directions. But the LIRR provided bus service to inconvenienced passengers, he said.

By 8:36 p.m., service was restored in both directions, Arena said.
