A man was struck and killed by a train in East Northport on Wednesday, an LIRR official said.

"An eastbound Port Jefferson train hit [a] . . . person on the track at about 1:05 a.m." who was not authorized to be there, said LIRR spokesman Rich Mendelson.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was killed just east of the Northport train station and pronounced dead at the scene, Mendelson said. Police are investigating.

Service on the Port Jefferson branch was delayed more than two hours during the investigation. Trains on the Port Jefferson branch resumed their normal schedule at 5:44 a.m., Mendelson said.

Later Wednesday, the 8:52 a.m. train from Babylon to Montauk was delayed because of a gas leak at Grove Street east of the Patchogue station, the Long Island Rail Road said.

Under its normal schedule, the train on the Montauk branch is scheduled to arrive at Montauk at 10:53 a.m. The LIRR said commuters were delayed by about 15 minutes.

A disabled train at Kew Gardens also caused the railway to skip stops for a time between Jamaica and Penn Station Wednesday morning. Stops later resumed at Kew Gardens, Forest Hills and Woodside.
