Police tape is at the scene where Thomas Martin, 59, of Deer Park, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet van westbound on Veterans Highway in Hauppauge when the vehicle struck Ronald Gatto, who was walking in the roadway at the time. A Central Islip man was struck by a van and killed late Thursday as he walked along Veterans Highway in Hauppauge, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Ronald Gatto, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash occurred at 9:55 p.m. when a 2003 Chevrolet van driven west by Thomas Martin, 59, of Deer Park, struck Gatto, who police said was walking in the road.

Police said the van was impounded for a safety inspection, but no charges were filed against Martin.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the accident to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential. The investigation is continuing.
