A man pushing a shopping cart along the shoulder of a road in St. James was fatally injured when struck by a car Monday evening, police said.

The man, whose identity was not released pending notification of next of kin, was struck at 8:22 p.m. as he walked along Railroad Avenue, Suffolk County police said. He was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where police said he died at 2:04 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the car, Kyle Stevenson, 18, of St. James, was not injured in the crash.

He was not charged.

Police said Stevenson was driving his 2003 Honda Civic east on Railroad Avenue when he struck the man walking on the shoulder near First Street.

The car has been impounded for a safety check.

The investigation is continuing, and police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.
