A Sayville man was driving a tree-trimming truck on the Long Island Expressway Thursday, even though his license had been revoked or suspended 38 times, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Joseph Leon, 55, of 80 Willow St., was arrested on two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle after he pulled into a commercial safety inspection stop in the park-and-ride lot near County Road 83 in Farmingville.

His arraignment information was not immediately available.

The inspection procedure includes both looking over vehicles for possible safety violations and checking the licenses of drivers, police said.

Since 1977, Leon's license had been revoked or suspended 38 times, police said in a news release.

Police said Leon was driving a 1999 GMC tree-trimming truck owned by Long Island Tree Service Inc. in Bayport. The truck had several safety violations and was impounded and taken out of service, police said.

A woman who answered the phone at the tree service company declined to comment.
