Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a hit-and-run accident Tuesday night that killed a Sayville man who was walking on Lakeland Avenue in Sayville, Suffolk County police said.

Daniel Fanuele, 42, was walking on Lakeland Avenue at 8:52 p.m. when he was hit by an unidentified vehicle police believe to be a Toyota that fled the scene, said Det. Sgt. Alan Feinstein of the Patchogue-based Fifth Squad, which is searching for the hit-and-run driver.

Based on forensic evidence collected at the crime scene, Feinstein's investigators concluded that the suspect's vehicle was a Toyota.

Fanuele was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician's assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Anyone who might have information on the incident can call the Fifth Squad, 631-854-8552, or Crime Stoppers, 800-220-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.
