Man struck by train at Patchogue station early Sunday
A man on the tracks at the Patchogue Long Island Rail Road station was struck by a train early Sunday morning, LIRR officials said.
The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. when a westbound train hit an "unauthorized person on the tracks," said LIRR spokesman Sam Zambuto. "The person struck, a male adult, was airlifted to a local hospital."
No further information on the man's condition or identity was available, Zambuto said. It is not clear why he was on the tracks.
The train was carrying 20 passengers and had been scheduled to arrive at Jamaica 1:35 a.m. That train and an eastbound train scheduled to arrive at Speonk at 1:17 a.m. were both delayed for about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Zambuto said Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police were investigating the case.
