A 34-year-old man walking home in Blue Point early Wednesday was stabbed by the resident of a home he was passing, police said.

Matthew Burke suffered a collapsed lung and a severe cut to his side in the 12:30 a.m. attack on Montauk Highway, which occurred after the victim and suspect had a brief exchange of words, Suffolk police said.

Burke was being treated at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue and is expected to survive, police said, although his condition was not immediately known on Wednesday.

Police arrested William Agosto, 45, at 3:40 a.m. at his home at 165 Montauk Hwy., where the stabbing took place.

Agosto was charged with second-degree assault.

He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.

Police said it was unclear what provoked the attack, and the two men didn't know each other. They said Burke may have asked Agosto a question - possibly, if he could have a cigarette - before the stabbing.
