Marine bureau cops save 2 swimmers from rip current at Ocean Bay Park
Two swimmers swept out to sea by a rip current in Ocean Bay Park were rescued by Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers on Saturday, police said.
Elias Bahou, 29, of Huntington and Katherine Robson, 30, of North Massapequa were swimming in the ocean south of Oneida Street and Champlain Walk on Fire Island when the strong current caught them, police said.
Onlookers called police about 2:17 p.m.
Officers Anthony Sangimino and Michael Malone, who were patrolling nearby, responded and entered the water with flotation devices. Sangimino reached Bahou and Robson first, police said, and passed the flotation devices to them.
The three reached the beach by 2:45 p.m., police said.
Surf height at the time of the rescue was about 4 feet, according to police.
