Mastic man charged with fatal hit-run

Erika Hughes, 24, of Shirley, seen holding her daughter, was hit and killed on Mastic Road, just south of Riverside Avenue, in Mastic.
A Mastic man pleaded not guilty Monday to charges he killed a 24-year-old Shirley mom in a hit-and-run last July in Mastic Beach, Suffolk authorities said.
Preston Mimms, 47, of 79 Wavecrest Dr., pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of leaving the scene of an incident involving death in the accident that claimed the life of Erika Hughes on July 29, 2011.
The accident occurred on Mastic Road, just south of Riverside Avenue. Suffolk County police said Hughes, who worked at an Amityville car dealership and was the single mother of a 15-month-old girl, was walking along the road just before midnight when she was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in a dark blue truck.
It was not immediately clear what led authorities to Mimms. In a statement released Monday, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota's office said Mimms was arraigned in Suffolk County Court before Judge Gary Weber on a grand jury arrest warrant.
He was held on $250,000 cash bail or $500,000 bond. His next court appearance is April 30 in Riverhead.
