Dead man found floating in Amityville pool, police say
The body of a 28-year-old man was found floating in an in-ground pool Tuesday at a North Amityville apartment complex, Suffolk County police said.
Detectives responded to a 911 call made at about 12:45 p.m. by a neighbor who found Maurice Stone, 28, of Amityville, face down in the pool at The Polo Club, a complex on Broadway and Parthey Lane, police said.
His death does not appear to be criminal in nature, said homicide Det. Sgt. Charles Leser.
Police said the man drowned but they were not sure how long he had been in the pool. He was not a resident of the complex, police said.
It was unknown if there was a lifeguard on duty or anyone else present when the man was discovered, police said.
A printed sign posted at a multipurpose room near the pool said the facility was closed Tuesday and is only open on weekends.
According to a maintenance worker for the complex, Rene Idrovo, there is always a lifeguard on duty during the pool's operating hours.
