A badly-burned body was found Monday in a garage fire at a Medford house that had been vacant for some time, Suffolk police said.

The body was discovered in a vehicle after a 911 caller reported the Maple Street fire just before 2 a.m. and Medford firefighters put out the flames, police said.

The death does not appear to be criminal in nature, said Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer, head of the homicide squad, which is working with arson detectives on the case.

He declined to release further details, but said the Suffolk medical examiner will determine the person's identity.
