A Medford woman's medical condition could have caused her fatal crash Thursday, Suffolk County police said.

Sixth Squad detectives are investigating the crash in Medford that killed Debra Heitleband, 48.

She was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla east on Horseblock Road at about 5 p.m. when she "apparently suffered a medical condition," drove through a red light, drove up a curb and hit a tree on the southeast corner of Route 112, police said in a news release.

Det. Sgt. Edward Aki of the Sixth Squad said a preliminary investigation suggests that Heitleband lost control immediately before the accident because of a medical condition.

"We won't know for sure until we have an autopsy report, but that's what it appears to be," he said.

Heitleband was taken by Medford Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where she was pronounced dead.

There were no passengers and no one else was injured, police said.
