About 40 people were evacuated from four buildings after a contractor doing road work on Walt Whitman Road in Melville accidentally disconnected a gas line to a nearby building, a National Grid spokeswoman said Monday.

No one was injured, and the buildings were made safe at 10:57 a.m., National Grid spokeswoman Wendy Ladd said. People returned to work at about 12:03 p.m., she said, after the buildings were allowed to "air out."

The primary building affected is at 1135 Walt Whitman Rd., officials said. The leak was reported at 10:15 a.m.

Southbound Walt Whitman was closed at Old Country Road, just south of the Northern State Parkway, police said. Emergency crews from National Grid were called to the scene and the Melville Fire Department also was on the scene, Suffolk fire officials said.
