A Melville fire department chief was injured Tuesday responding to a fire at a recycling plant, police said, when his SUV was struck by a car and overturned.
Second Assistant Chief Michael McKeefery, 61, was taken to New Island Hospital in Bethpage for treatment of an arm injury, Suffolk police said.
McKeefery, who was traveling south on Route 110 with flashing lights and sirens, attempted to make a left turn on to Smith Street about 5:30 p.m., police said.
A 2005 Saab traveling north on Route 110 through the intersection had a green traffic light, police said, and the two vehicles collided.
That driver of the Saab was not injured, police said.
Suffolk police said there were no charges.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, at Two Brothers Scrap Metal in Farmingdale.
