A Middle Island man is accused of severely neglecting his five Doberman pinschers, including one that had to be removed on a stretcher Monday.

The Suffolk County SPCA charged John K. Ferrera, 22 of 47 S. Sweezytown Rd., with animal cruelty, it said in a Tuesday news release.

SPCA chief Roy Gross says all the dogs had severe eye infections, were underweight and had open sores. One of the dogs was pregnant.

Gross says the animals were kept in an area filled with debris and that a dead horse was found in a nearby yard. The dogs have been taken to a shelter to be examined.
