A man pushing a shopping cart on Mill Road in Coram Wednesday was critically injured when he was hit by a car that left the scene, Suffolk County police said.

Gary Williams, who police said is homeless, was walking on the right shoulder of northbound Mill Road when he was struck by a northbound sedan about 11 a.m. between Dryden Avenue and David Overton Road, police said.

Williams, 57, of Coram was taken to Stony Brook Brook University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are looking for a newer model, dark-colored, four-door sedan with damage to the windshield and a passenger side mirror.
