Minor flooding predicted for South Shore
Low-lying areas of the South Shore in Nassau and Suffolk will see minor flooding Friday thanks to phenomena known as long-fetch waves and long-period swells, officials said.
The National Weather Service coastal flood advisory is from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
There is a high surf advisory for South Shore beaches until 6 p.m., officials said. A small craft warning for the South Shore also was issued.
Forecasters predict tides of 2 to 2 1/2 feet above normal because of high astronomical tides being combined with fetch and swell factors.
So-called long-period swells and long-fetch swells are known to erode beaches. Officials are predicting breaking waves of 6-8 feet in Atlantic beaches' surf zones.
Despite the waves, Long Island will bask in what's turning out to be a beautiful fall day.
Temperatures are expected to be in the high 50s, with a light wind and clear skies Friday night, though overnight lows will dip into the upper 30s. Forecasters are calling for sunshine Saturday with mostly sunny skies on Sunday.
