Suffolk County police searching the Nissequogue River in Kings Park Wednesday evening found the body of a swimmer reported in distress Monday, the department said.

The adult male was found at about 6:40 p.m. in the river near Old Dock Road, according to a news release,

A physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The identity of the swimmer is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.

Suffolk police had responded to calls of a swimmer in need of assistance about 7:49 p.m. Monday, Newsday previously reported. A search of the river was paused about 1 a.m. Tuesday and resumed later that morning.

Detectives with the Suffolk police department's homicide squad were investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death, police said. Detectives believe the cause of death is not criminal in nature.
