Service has been restored on the Montauk branch of the Long Island Rail Road between Babylon and Montauk after an unauthorized person on the tracks was struck and killed by a train, an LIRR spokesman said.
The person, who was only identified as an adult male, was hit east of Sayville at about 8:50 a.m. by an eastbound train from Babylon destined for Speonk, spokesman Sam Zambuto said.
The Speonk-bound train, which Zambuto said carried between 20 and 30 passengers, was held at the scene of the collision for about two hours.
The other train affected by the temporary suspension — the 8:10 a.m. train from Jamaica headed to Montauk — was held at the Sayville station while the investigation continued.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority police are investigating the incident.
